The Region
The Luberon of hilltop villages, ochre cliffs and morning markets.
The house sits between two of the officially listed Most Beautiful Villages of France.
Gordes and Roussillon both hold the Plus Beaux Villages de France label. The first is ten minutes from the gate, the second twelve. In between: vineyards, cherry orchards and very little traffic.
Gordes
The dry-stone village clinging to its cliff. Market on Tuesday mornings; take the lanes early or late in the day.
Roussillon
Facades the colour of fire and the Ochre Trail. Allow an hour's walk through the old quarries.
The Provençal Colorado
In Rustrel, 35 minutes from the house. Red cliffs at sunrise, before the heat and the crowds.
Lavender blooms from mid-June to mid-July. The Sault plateau is 50 minutes away, Sénanque Abbey a quarter of an hour.
The morning markets
Coustellet on Sundays, Apt on Saturdays, Gordes on Tuesdays. Go for the apricots and goat's cheese; stay for coffee under the plane trees.
Swimming beyond the pool
When the pool is not enough: the Toulourenc gorges, Lake Esparron and the Verdon inlets, an hour's drive through the fields.
By bike, on foot, at the boules
The Tour du Luberon cycle route passes two kilometres from the house. The Ventoux trails are 40 minutes away. And for the rest of us, pétanque starts in the village at six.
